Francis Hough originally purchased the land that this home sits on in 1879 from Jacob Dirk. Francis then sold the property to his daughter, Joanne Hough. Joanne had the home built in the 1890s. This house was referred to as the “stick house” due to it being built with 2x4s and framing. The original house had four rooms – a living room, a kitchen, a downstairs bedroom, and a large upstairs bedroom. House shoes were found under the stairs and above the front door.
Joanne then sold the house to John Schwartz in 1909.
The house had a wraparound porch at one time. This was verified by an old Sanborne fire insurance map, which was found by Tom Boltz. The house also had a large room added on to the back.
Other owners were the Rider family and the Harmon family. Edith Harmon’s granddaughter sold the home to current owners Phyllis and the late Carl Mercer.
